Improve Hip Mobility and Prevent Injury in Combat Sports: How Massage and Myotherapy can Help

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In the world of combat sports and martial arts, agility, flexibility, and mobility are paramount. One commonly overlooked component of a fighter’s toolkit is hip mobility

Hip mobility plays a critical role in combat training and performance enhancement while also being significantly important in preventing serious injury.

Massage and myotherapy can assist in enhancing an individual’s hip mobility. This key component of injury prevention and sports recovery should be a top priority in every fighter’s routine.

The Importance of Hip Mobility:

Enhanced Range of Motion

Combat sports demand a wide range of motion in the hips for various movements, kicks, and takedowns. Improved hip mobility allows a fighter to execute techniques more effectively.

Injury Prevention

Flexible and mobile hips will prevent injury by reducing the strain on muscles, ligaments and joints during intense training and combat.

Balance and Stability

Strong and mobile hips lead to enhanced balance and stability thus enabling fighters to maintain control of their body during complex movements.

Common Hip Issues in Combat Sports:

Before discussing the benefits of incorporating massage and myotherapy into your self management routine, it is essential to recognise the likely issues you would encounter:

Tight Hip Flexors

Intense kicking, knees and takedowns will cause tension through the hip flexors which will decrease mobility, power and speed. This muscular tension may expose you to potential strains or even tendon related injuries.

Glute and TFL Muscle Weakness

Decreased strength in these muscles causes imbalances in the hips and increases the risk of hip injury such as tendon or muscle tears and even hip bursitis, while also contributing to an inability to activate the glutes.

Limited hip flexibility will hinder high kicks, ground work, and defensive manoeuvres.

Massage and Myotherapy for Hip Mobility:

Myotherapists can address issues of hip mobility and enhance a combat athlete’s performance and prevent injury. Here are some techniques that can be adopted to assist in this:

Myofascial Release

By targeting trigger points and fascial restrictions your practitioner can assist in improving joint range of motion and overall mobility

Strengthening Weak Hip Muscles

Your practitioner can identify muscle imbalances contributing to your issue and provide a plan of action to strengthen these areas.

Massage

Various massage techniques performed by your practitioner can promote blood flow and reduce muscle tension. This will aid in targeting tissue repair and recovery after intense training or competition.

Personalised Treatment Plans

Myotherapists will assess, address, and treat in accordance to an individually designed treatment plan. A myotherapist will create this with your input to ensure that the plan supports your goals and needs.

Incorporating Massage and Myotherapy into Training:

Regular Maintenance

Combat athletes will benefit from regular massage and myotherapy sessions to maintain optimal hip mobility and prevent injury.

Pre-Fight Preparation

Scheduling sessions leading up to a competition or event will help combat athletes ensure their hips are in peak condition for the challenge and performing at their best.

Recovery

Post event or post fight massage and myotherapy can aid in reducing muscle soreness and inflammation which will facilitate repair of tissue.

Massage and myotherapy can be beneficial in helping you unlock your combat potential. With guidance, you can step into the ring or onto the mats with confidence, knowing your body is prepared for the challenge.

So, next time you’re training or preparing for an event, take into consideration your hips and if they feel up to the challenge.

Mehar was fabulous! Not only was she warm, welcoming and funny, but professional and thorough.
From the moment I walked in I felt well supported. She was able to identify what was going on, factoring in older ailments, and provide me with a treatment plan and options.
Her focus was on sustainable changes and support moving forward, and I had a written plan and clear explanations and clarifications on everything. I never felt like she was encouraging me to need to come back unnecessarily.
It took a few visits, and each time was met with the same warmth and professionalism. I got consistent progress and feel so much better now, even though it's a few months on from when I last saw her.
It's very clear she is wonderful at what she does, thinks about the whole person and I would definitely recommend her to others considering needing podiatry support.

I've been coming here exclusively since my first consultation. I've had constant shoulder and arm pain from my line of work; the exercises my physio, Carina provided are easy to remember, not time consuming and super effective!

Bonus: the space feels super clean and calming - highly recommend coming here

I’ve been seeing Talia for a few weeks now for treatment on my shoulder bursitis. From day 1 she was great! She explained everything about my condition to me and what she wanted to do which helped me visualise my own recovery. Could not recommend her enough.
