Haven’t Heard of Foot Mobilisation Therapy? It’s Like an Oil Change for Your Feet!

Foot Mobilisation Therapy (FMT) is a hands on treatment that uniquely incorporates both mobilisation and manipulation of the bones and joints in the feet. FMT helps manually realign these bones, which, when misaligned, can be a leading cause of foot and ankle pain. This allows the foot to move more smoothly much like how a car runs better after an oil change.

Every step we take places load through the bones and joints in our feet. If we have flat feet or high arches, these loads can be placed on the joints at angles that are not ideal for natural joint compression and loading.

Over time, this increased stress on the joints can contribute to bones in the foot becoming misaligned. This may cause foot pain and negatively affect foot posture. When one bone shifts out of place, it can create a chain reaction, causing other bones in the foot to also move out of alignment. This can affect the entire medial or lateral column of the foot.

One of the key bones involved in foot loading is the talus. The importance of the talus in lower limb structure and walking mechanics has been recognised for centuries. The talus is considered a hydraulic joint because it has no muscular attachments only ligamentous attachments making it more prone to misalignment.

Foot Mobilisation Therapy can assist with realigning the talus, which can then positively influence the alignment of other bones throughout the foot.
FMT works through gradual change over a series of appointments. This hands on treatment supports the body’s natural healing processes. Synovial fluid – the body’s natural joint lubricant is encouraged to enter the joint spaces through mobilisation, helping to reduce pain and stiffness within the joints.

FMT can be used to help manage:

  • Arthritic joints in the feet
  • Bunions
  • Claw toes
  • General foot fatigue
  • Arch pain
  • Heel pain
  • Shin splints
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles pain
  • Ankle sprains
  • Neuroma and bursitis

By completing FMT, joints can become more mobile, foot posture may improve, surrounding muscles can become stronger, and pain signals being received by the body may reduce.

Foot Mobilisation Therapy promotes improved mobility, function and posture in the feet.

It is suitable for all ages and takes only minutes to perform. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the clinic or speak with one of our friendly Podiatrists, who can explain the treatment in more detail.

Mehar was fabulous! Not only was she warm, welcoming and funny, but professional and thorough.
From the moment I walked in I felt well supported. She was able to identify what was going on, factoring in older ailments, and provide me with a treatment plan and options.
Her focus was on sustainable changes and support moving forward, and I had a written plan and clear explanations and clarifications on everything. I never felt like she was encouraging me to need to come back unnecessarily.
It took a few visits, and each time was met with the same warmth and professionalism. I got consistent progress and feel so much better now, even though it's a few months on from when I last saw her.
It's very clear she is wonderful at what she does, thinks about the whole person and I would definitely recommend her to others considering needing podiatry support.

The whole client therapist experience has been amazing. My Myotherapist provided me with a detailed plan to ensure my progress to meet my goals as well as addressing my issues of pain.

Each follow up session is reviewed, discussed and any changes added/deleted or modified.

The timely reminders and follow up from the clinic and experience with the Client Experience Officers have been always polite and friendly.

I've been coming here exclusively since my first consultation. I've had constant shoulder and arm pain from my line of work; the exercises my physio, Carina provided are easy to remember, not time consuming and super effective!

Bonus: the space feels super clean and calming - highly recommend coming here

I’ve been seeing Talia for a few weeks now for treatment on my shoulder bursitis. From day 1 she was great! She explained everything about my condition to me and what she wanted to do which helped me visualise my own recovery. Could not recommend her enough.
