Active at Work? Here’s Why You Still Need to Exercise Outside the Job

Reading Time: 2 minutes

For those of us who work in physically demanding jobs, we can often feel that our daily routine provides all the exercise that we need. While physical jobs undoubtedly involve strenuous activity and load, it is important to recognise that exercise beyond work hours is essential for overall health and well being. Let’s explore why individuals with physically demanding jobs should still incorporate regular exercise into their routines to achieve a balanced lifestyle.

Addressing muscular imbalances

It’s common for work activities to be mainly performed on one side of the body, such as digging trenches or pulling cables. This means the load isn’t evenly spread through both sides of the body. Over time, this can lead to muscular imbalances, where certain muscles become overdeveloped while others remain underused. Regular exercise outside of work, especially with a focus on the whole body, can help address these imbalances, promoting muscle development and reducing the risk of injuries.

Maintaining flexibility and mobility

Physical jobs often involve repetitive motions or staying in specific positions for extended periods, which can lead to reduced flexibility and limited mobility. Engaging in regular stretching exercises and activities like clinical pilates can help improve flexibility, increase range of motion, and prevent stiffness or discomfort.

Weight management

Physical jobs might burn a considerable number of calories, but they can also increase appetite due to the energy expenditure. Without proper attention to diet and additional exercise, this increased caloric intake could lead to weight gain over time. Incorporating exercise into daily routines can help balance caloric intake, aid in weight management, and prevent obesity related health issues.

Improving sleep quality

Physical jobs can be physically exhausting, leading to disrupted sleep patterns or inadequate rest. Regular exercise has been shown to improve sleep quality by promoting deeper sleep cycles and helping individuals fall asleep faster. Quality rest is crucial for physical and mental recovery, ensuring that workers are refreshed and ready for another day on the job.

In summary, no matter how active your job is, taking time to move with purpose outside of work can make all the difference to how you feel, perform, and recover each day.

Mehar was fabulous! Not only was she warm, welcoming and funny, but professional and thorough.
From the moment I walked in I felt well supported. She was able to identify what was going on, factoring in older ailments, and provide me with a treatment plan and options.
Her focus was on sustainable changes and support moving forward, and I had a written plan and clear explanations and clarifications on everything. I never felt like she was encouraging me to need to come back unnecessarily.
It took a few visits, and each time was met with the same warmth and professionalism. I got consistent progress and feel so much better now, even though it's a few months on from when I last saw her.
It's very clear she is wonderful at what she does, thinks about the whole person and I would definitely recommend her to others considering needing podiatry support.

The whole client therapist experience has been amazing. My Myotherapist provided me with a detailed plan to ensure my progress to meet my goals as well as addressing my issues of pain.

Each follow up session is reviewed, discussed and any changes added/deleted or modified.

The timely reminders and follow up from the clinic and experience with the Client Experience Officers have been always polite and friendly.

I've been coming here exclusively since my first consultation. I've had constant shoulder and arm pain from my line of work; the exercises my physio, Carina provided are easy to remember, not time consuming and super effective!

Bonus: the space feels super clean and calming - highly recommend coming here

I’ve been seeing Talia for a few weeks now for treatment on my shoulder bursitis. From day 1 she was great! She explained everything about my condition to me and what she wanted to do which helped me visualise my own recovery. Could not recommend her enough.
